Tall Tails

Carnival Corvina from a PFH Fan

Brett:

In the 90s, during Carnival weekend, I caught some nice yellow corvinas off the island of ESTIVA, which is a huge rock between Otoque and Bona islands, facing Punta Chame. Punta Chame is about 10 miles from these three islands. So, I decided to try my luck again this year as we are close to Carnival and it is a small tide.

Yesterday, we caught our bait at Playa Bique (located just before Puerto Vacamonte, when you come from Panama City). We only had to throw the cast net once to get all the bait we needed. From there, we went to Otoque and began bottom fishing drifting next to three small cayucos that were catching small striped corvinas, ranging from 2 to 5 pound. We caught about half a dozen of these corvinas as well as small spotted grouper and yellow snappers. The fishing took place in the canal that is formed between the islands of Otoque and Estiva and with waters about 110 ft deep.

I noticed about 6 yachts trolling on the Western side of Bona Island and do not know what they were catching, but I saw one of them bring up a Spanish mackerel.

The weather was nice, fresh winds and calm waters.

I am attaching some pictures showing you what we caught.
