Tall Tails

My last trip to Panama in Nov, 2009 was especially great!  We hit Lake Gatun for a day of Peacock Bass fishing with my usual crew on the last day of our trip.  Of course, we had no idea on how the fishing would be since we had never been out that late for Bass, but to my surprise the fishing was amazing.
Now, I am not much on using live bait so the first thing I thought to try was a Lucky Craft Pointer suspending minnow.  No luck on it after 20 or 30 casts so I switched to a Pop-R top water bait.  I picked up a couple of small Bass on that but the action was not fast enough for me,so I switched to a 1/8 oz. red and white Marabou Jig and it was on!!  I started catching Bass like crazy, they were eating this jig up!  I ran out of the red and white so I started using a yellow one; it only got better.
My buddies could not believe how I was catching more Peacock Bass than them, as they were all using the usual live minnow setup.  My trick was that I would cast these near any structure and let it sink about three to four feet and reel it in slow.  I was using 6 lb Berkley Fire Line on my Shimano spinning reel with a six foot Shimano rod.
Thanks Panama Fishing Hole for making my catch, the Catch of the Week!!!
